ABBA In Australia 1977 - 4th March Sydney - 41 Years Ago Today

ABBA Live In Sydney Australia 4th March 1977

Repeat post from 2016 with a couple of extra items added 😄

ON THIS DAY – 4th March 1977
ABBA Live In Australia !
R.A.S Showground Sydney – 8.30pm
Sound Rehearsal 2.00pm – make sure they got all the water out !
On Friday 4th March 1977 ABBA performed their second concert in Sydney.
This concert was not part of the original schedule and was added in later due to the overwhelming numbers - too many for one concert.
In reality, they could have held at least 5 concerts in Sydney and still all shows would have been sold out. Just as with the UK, demand far exceeded what was available.
My Mum was always sorry that we didn’t go to the second show – I think even now she hasn’t gotten over that. But in 1977, I think $90 for two concerts (tickets for the Sydney shows were $9.00 each) was a bit of a stretch for a woman on her own with 4 daughters under the age of 15.
It truly would have been amazing to see ABBA twice. – but I know that just being able to see ABBA once was a major blessing.
I was always just a tad jealous though of those that were watching  ABBA on Friday night while I was sitting at home. It’s all the family could think about on the Friday night – what we were missing – it was kind of sad knowing that this was the last time ABBA would be this close to us. But it wasn’t even just that – it was also knowing that this audience had great weather for their show ! Double whammy lol.
There were no issues at all on the Friday night, as far as I am aware, and ABBA performed the complete set list, including So Long, to another 30,000 people chanting ‘We want ABBA’.
I am sure ABBA would have breathed a sigh of relief after Thursday night’s experience – and no doubt they were not the only ones.
There was more emphasis on crowd control for this concert – with more security to ensure no one was crushed or trampled in the initial rush for seats.
The previous evening’s events had shocked everyone – who would expect ABBA fans to behave hysterically ? lol
But the organisers learned fast, and it all went more smoothly on Friday night.
Right up to the fireworks display at the end of the show !
This night stays in my heart, along with Thursday night, but for totally different reasons.
I am surprised that an audience recording for this night has never surfaced. Especially as we have recordings from every other show in Australia – even Sydney on Thursday night, with the awful wind and rain.
It would be amazing to find a recording for Friday night – it surely has to be out there somewhere !
When the concert finished on Friday night, the crew had to immediately breakdown the sound, lighting and stage equipment and get it on its way to Melbourne for setup the following day. ABBA would be performing there on 5th.
Equipment was sent by road in IPEC trucks and by airfreight – with film equipment being sent with the crew on a following charter flight – which left Sydney at 4am. Film equipment consisted of 40 pieces weighing in at about 900 kilos.
What huge days for the crew on this tour – no wonder they didn’t want to travel all the way to Brisbane as well – would have been too much with the schedule they had.

Here is a beautiful raw and Live performance of 'I Wonder' by Frida in Sydney 1977. This recording is from 3rd March concert.

ABBA & Benny TV Special - Australia September 2017 ! Updated

Network 7's Sunday Night program are doing a fabulous special on Benny Andersson & ABBA on 17th September 2017.

Check their website here:

THIS SUNDAY: An ABBA event to remember.

Forty years after they landed in Australia, the iconic foursome go on the record with Sunday Night.
Hear the personal stories behind their meteoric rise, heartbreaking split - and the spectacular secret project that the world's been waiting to see.

On Sunday at 8pm

Thousands of screaming fans greeted Abba as they touched down in Australia in 1977. ABBAMania had officially swept the country.
Were you there? What do you remember? We want to hear your stories – and see your pics – to celebrate that incredible moment in music history.
Catch the Abba extravaganza on Channel 7, Sunday Night at 8pm.

Nothing could have prepared them for this.
Touching down in Sydney in February 1977, the four Swedish superstars behind Abba were overwhelmed.
Australia had been central in reviving their post-Eurovision dreams, when it had seemed that the band would amount to little more than another ‘one hit wonder’.
‘Mamma Mia’ was championed by an Aussie icon and by 1977 ABBAmania was not just sweeping Australia, but worldwide.

Frida, Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha didn’t believe they could live up to the expectations of the huge crowds of adoring fans that turned out to greet them.
“[I thought] this is going to be the last nail in the coffin… it's all going to blow up,” Benny Andersson told Sunday Night.
It didn’t. Fans danced in the rain in Sydney’s Moore Park and brought Melbourne city centre to a standstill.

Forty years on, the iconic foursome lay bare the moments behind the music and the love stories that knitted them together, only to be torn apart as fame took its toll on them all.
But it couldn’t stop the phenomenal love for Abba’s hits - and finally, four decades after that whirlwind Australia tour, comes the news fans thought they would never hear.

Benny Andersson reveals the full story behind Abba’s unexpected return, on Sunday at 8pm on Channel 7.

And yes, I was lucky enough to be involved and interviewed for this wonderful Special ! 😋

ABBA In Australia 13 March 1977 - Farewell ABBA - 40 Years Ago Today !

13th March 1977
ABBA Live In Australia !
Well my friends, and fellow fans, today we farewell ABBA from Australia.
At 7.30pm ABBA boarded their plane at Perth airport and flew home to Sweden.
It was a very sad feeling to know that they were leaving our country – we had no idea it would be the last time we would see them here.
What an amazing time it was between 27th February and 13th March 1977.
Over 4300 kilometres travelled, 4 capital cities, 11 concerts, 160,000 tickets sold.
Australia had never experienced anything like this Tour before – it was the first of its kind for us.
And ABBA had never experienced anything like Australia before.
Neither ABBA, nor Australia, would see anything like this again.
We gave them everything Australia had to offer.
Torrential rain, gale force winds, thousands of insects, illness, injury – glorious sunshine, beautiful harbours and bays for sailing, unique wildlife (and no, I don’t mean the fans !) – harassing media,  pushy politicians, a bomb threat – and thousands upon thousands of screaming, maniacal, adoring fans wherever they went.
In return, ABBA gave us everything they had to offer – and they were truly magnificent.
They took everything we threw at them – with style, grace, humour and a fabulous level of energy.
When they came to Australia, it was mania in the true sense of the word. To say it was a crazy time is an understatement.
By the time they left here, that mania was evolving into a deep and true respect and admiration for this magnificent and phenomenal group of Swedes – and it continues to this day.
They gave us the time of our lives – nothing else would ever compare – and we thank you ABBA from the bottom of our hearts.

They came - they saw - they endured - they conquered !

What a shame this album never saw the light of day - but perhaps we still have this to look forward to this year as part of the 40th Anniversary Celebration ?

ABBA In Australia 12 March 1977 - Live In Perth - 40 Years Ago Today !

Perth, Western Australia
Perth Entertainment Centre
Wellington Street, Perth
Show 1:  2.30pm
Show 2:  8.30pm

Today, the last day of the tour in Australia, ABBA would perform 2 shows at the Entertainment Centre.
Both shows were of course, sold out.
Talk about saturation media. Well, actually, I can’t – as there does not seem to be any media coverage of this day at all.
I have scoured scrapbooks, online newspaper archives, online library archives – blogs and websites – and I have come up with absolutely nothing !
I am stunned to stay the least.

Check out my blog post from 2016 for the recap:
