The definitive compilation of the unrivalled career of timeless hitmakers ABBA, Gold: Greatest Hits, will be reissued for its 25th anniversary, as a limited edition gold vinyl release, on 30 June. The 2LP set will be pressed on high quality, heavyweight 180g vinyl, and will also include a card for MP3 download.


The retrospective, which features no fewer than 19 of the Swedish quartet's biggest and best-loved hits, was first released on 21 September 1992. It became, and remains, one of the bestselling compilations released from then on, with global sales estimated at 30 million. It reached diamond certification in Canada and France and achieved a dizzying 17-times platinum status in both the UK and Australia.
Featuring such anthems as 'Waterloo,' 'Dancing Queen,' 'Money Money Money' and 'Fernando,' the album reached No. 1 in the UK, Germany, France and across most of the rest of Europe. It also topped the charts in Australia and hit the top of Billboard's Top Pop Catalogue Albums survey.

The indelible mark left on popular music by Benny, Björn, Agnetha and Anni-Frid has been reinforced with every reappearance of the Gold album, such as in 2008, to coincide with the Mamma Mia! movie, and in 2014, for ABBA's 40th anniversary.
Gold is the second-bestselling artist album ever in the UK (second only to Queen's Greatest Hits), with sales for the ABBA release estimated by the Official Charts Company there in summer 2016 at 5.3 million. Its chart record in the UK is particularly remarkable, as it's topped the album bestsellers there in three separate years: for a week on its first appearance in 1992, then three times (for a total of six weeks) in 1999, then for two weeks in 2008.

In the Duvemåla room, guests are greeted by a welcome letter from Björn Ulvaeus, which paints a picture of the arduous path of emigration, then and now.

The room breathes peace and tranquillity, with handpicked details and props. There is handmade wallpaper and handwoven rag-rugs. On the wall, framed in glass, hangs a dress from the 1995 musical. The terrace is enclosed by a genuine Swedish roundpole fence and guests can cosy up on a wooden bench that smells of good old-fashioned linseed oil, to enjoy the twilight hours. The mini-bar is found in a rustic-style nightstand and the TV is hidden behind a traditional Swedish pärlspånt panel, closed with a simple hook. The traveller’s trunk, rocking chair and sofa bed, all handcrafted in Sweden in the early 1900s, take you back to the period when Vilhelm Moberg’s The Emigrants unfolded. Featuring state-of-the-art comfort, the unique ambiance of the room is an exciting contrast to the hotel’s other spaces.

The ABBA Gold album was released in 1992, ten years after ABBA took a pause. Over 30 million copies of the album have been sold and it is considered one of ABBA’s major successes, as well as being one of the best-selling CDs of all time in the UK, the home of pop music. In collaboration with ABBA The Museum and as a tribute to the ABBA revival of the 90s seen all over the world, Pop House Hotel has transformed one of the junior suites into an ABBA Gold room. In this 40th Anniversary year, it is difficult to imagine a time when the music of ABBA wasn’t a regular soundtrack to our everyday lives, but when the group split up in 1982 a 10 year hiatus was to follow. ABBA was almost banished from the airwaves and their albums were listed as out of print and disappeared from the shops.
We were convinced it was all over, says Benny Andersson today. "We figured on royalties coming in during 1983, maybe until 1984, but after that? No way."
"In the 1980s we were off the radar," says Björn Ulvaeus. "The general attitude was that ABBA was totally uncool. If, like me, you’ve got poor self-confidence, it was hard to not figure that’s it. It’s over."
As everyone knows now, they could not have been more wrong, when in 1992 the rebirth of ABBA’s music began in earnest. U2 included a cover of Dancing Queen on the Zoo TV Tour and when Nirvana played that year’s Reading Festival, Kurt Cobain personally requested ABBA cover band, Björn Again as their support. That same year scripts were being put together for two Australian movies: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Muriel’s Wedding, both featuring ABBA songs as an integral part of the plot.
The 1992 ABBA revival peaked when Erasure’s tribute EP, Abba-esque hit the top of the charts, rousing the record label Polygram to release the compilation album, ABBA Gold, with Dancing Queen as the opening track, at the end of 1992.
ABBA Gold has currently sold some 30 million copies around the world and in the UK last year, it overtook The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper on the all-time best-seller list to reach Number Two (Number One is Queen’s Greatest Hits).

ABBA Gold Gets Another Release - 40th Anniversary Edition

ABBA‘s 1992 greatest hits album ABBA Gold will be reissued in April this year as part of the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
There have been various versions of this evergreen compilation over the years, including a 2CD edition and a CD+DVD offering. This new edition will actually be a three-CD set, presented in a digi-pack, and will feature the standard 19-track compilation on disc one, the More ABBA Gold set on disc two, and a third CD made up of B-sides (see full track listing below).

Around the same time a limited edition Waterloo seven-inch vinyl picture disc will be issued and as previously reported a deluxe edition of the Waterloo album will also be released.
It’s going to be a busy year for ABBA fans with a singles vinyl box coming up later in the spring and the autumn promising a Live At Wembley release.
ABBA Gold 40th Anniversary Edition will be released on 7 April 2014, and can currently be pre-ordered from Amazon in Germany. This post will be updated when it’s available elsewhere.

ABBA Overtakes The Beatles !

Abba's greatest hits collection has overtaken The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper in the chart of the biggest selling albums in British musical history.

 

While both albums have sold over 5.1 million copies in the UK, the Swedish band's 1992 Best Of collection has now nudged ahead of The Beatles' 1967 album by nearly 15,000 copies.
An estimated one in five British households owns a copy of either Gold or Sgt Pepper's.
The announcement coincides with this year's Eurovision Song Contest being held in Abba's homeland. The group won Eurovision in 1974 with Waterloo, which became their first number one single in the UK.
Bjorn Ulvaeus, who co-wrote Abba hits including Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You and The Name Of The Game said: “It feels unreal - outselling the greatest record of all time.”
Queen's 1981 Greatest Hits album remains the UK's most popular, with 5.9 million sales.
Adele's 2011 album, 21, and Oasis' 1995 second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, complete the top 5.
This week may also mark a double celebration for Abba, with the group's former singer Agnetha Faltskog looking set to score the highest-charting solo album of her career this evening.
Her new offering, A, looks likely to break the top 10 according to mid-week sales figures, while her previous UK best, My Colouring Book, peaked at Number 12.
