ABBA The Museum Presents “ABBA in Japan - The last tour” Exhibition

ABBA The Museum presents special exhibition “ABBA in Japan - The last tour” at Yasuragi !

ABBA The Museum and the Japanese spa and conference hotel Yasuragi are initiating a collaboration, presenting a special exhibition of ABBA’s last tour in Japan. The exhibition is based on the book ABBA The Backstage Stories by Ingmarie Halling. Costumes by ABBA’s costume designer Owe Sandström will also be on display. The exhibition will moreover feature brand new photographs of ABBA The Museum, captured by the keen eye and camera of award-winning photographer Mattias Edwall, who gives us his version of the story of ABBA.

The Exhibition

ABBA’s last tour was in Japan in 1980, where they performed their final concert to a paying audience in Budokan, Tokyo. No one knew then that a few years later the world-renowned pop group would be taking a pause – never to perform together again. For the Japanese people, this was an unforgettable experience, with long-awaited concerts that had been publicized since 1978 during a promo tour to Tokyo. Ingmarie Halling, today director of ABBA The Museum, participated in the tour the following year, and in the exhibition she shares her experience of being costume manager for the major pop stars.

“I have very special memories of the tour of Japan, the respectful audience, the food, the culture, the contrasts of a country that is both a pioneer in technology and a preserver of ancient customs. And I will never forget the visit that Frida and I made to an authentic Japanese bath house. ABBA has a special relationship with Japan and vice versa, there’s no doubt about that,” says Ingmarie Halling, Museum Director, ABBA The Museum.

Letter Of Appreciation from Japan

Since opening in 1997, one of Yasuragi’s goals is to lift Japanese culture and highlight the connection between Japan and Sweden. The hotel’s Gallery often features exhibitions that have a connection with Japan, as well as other themes linked to their operations.

“This is a unique collaboration between two of Stockholm’s strongest brands. Being able to work together in the hospitality industry and strengthen Stockholm as a destination is extremely enjoyable. The story of ABBA’s relationship with Japan, and the Japanese tribute to the group is worth telling, and doing so here in our Japanese milieu further enhances the experience. Our guests will be given fresh insight into the key part of our cultural heritage that ABBA represents,” comments Florence Cardell, Marketing and Sales manager at Yasuragi.

In conjunction with the exhibition, brand new photographs of ABBA The Museum by Mattias Edwall are being shown, titled ABBA The Museum + Mattias Edwall = true!

Ingmarie Halling says, “With his eye and camera Mattias creates his own chronicle of our museum. And we are proud to show these photographs for the first time at Yasuragi. A keen eye, presence and precision are Mattias’s trademark, it’s like he sees things that others don’t and teaches us to see them.”

An exclusive collection of different products created in collaboration with ABBA’s costume designer Owe Sandström and inspired by the ABBA kimono will be launched on October 6. The collection will be available at Yasuragi and the ABBA The Museum shop.

The exhibition will open on October 6, 2015, inaugurated by the Ambassador of Japan to Sweden, H.E. Mr. Seiji Morimoto, and be on show at Yasuragi in Saltsjö-Boo through April 15, 2016.

Free entrance.

Frida's 70th Birthday Celebration - Join In Now !

A Birthday Celebration !

Frida will celebrate her 70th birthday on 15th November 2015 and, as two of her loyal fans, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to arrange something special. We felt that Frida might appreciate a donation to the charity she created with her good friend Dan Daniell, so we contacted Görel Hanser in Stockholm who discussed it with Frida. After a short while we received a reply: Frida would be pleased for us to encourage donations to ‘Frida & Dan Daniell für Kinder’ (‘Frida & Dan Daniell for Children’).

We are excited to have received items generously donated by ABBA The Museum and its Director & Curator Ingmarie Halling, who is also a personal friend of Frida. These will be auctioned alongside items donated by our friends and from our own collections. You can also make a donation and include a personal message which we will forward to Frida.

Stay updated by following us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. You can also join the conversation by adding #frida70 to your tweets and posts! Alternatively, email us at info@frida70.com and we will add your name to our mailing list.

Thank you for taking part in our project!

by Evelyn Nuyens & Monique Hoevens

All donations will be transferred to ‘Frida & Dan Daniell für Kinder’ (‘Frida & Dan Daniell for Children’), which primarily supports projects in Frida's home country of Switzerland, but also in Europe and around the world. When you donate, you have the opportunity to write a message to Frida. Please note that only one message per person will be forwarded to Frida.

Whichever way you donate, please give generously. Thank you!

Ingmarie Halling Now Director Of ABBA The Museum !

Ingmarie Halling has become director of ABBA The Museum.

Three years ago, Mattias Hansson was commissioned on a consultancy basis to draw up the guidelines for a new concept and lead efforts to build, launch and market what was to become ABBA The Museum at Djurgården in Stockholm. Today, almost two years after opening, success is a fact. And now a new principal owner is taking over operation of the museum. Phase two is underway. POP HOUSE SWEDEN, which already owns the property at Djurgårdsvägen and runs the hotel and restaurant, is now taking over the operations of ABBA The Museum as well. Ingmarie Halling, curator of the museum, will become Museum Director.

“Mattias has been a key figure in the creation of the museum. Without his creative ability it would not look like it does today,” said Björn Ulvaeus, who led efforts to establish the museum in close collaboration with Hansson.

Now that the address at Djurgårdsvägen 68 is becoming POP HOUSE SWEDEN, with shareholders Conni Jonsson, Björn Ulvaeus and Pelle Lindberg, the corporate structure will change. POP HOUSE comprises three operations: a hotel, restuarant and museum, with ABBA The Museum being a major crowd-puller.

“Taking on the position as Museum Director of one of Stockholm’s and perhaps Sweden’s most popular destinations is incredibly exciting,” says Ingmarie Halling. “I have been working with the museum for several years, and have also been on tour with the exhibit, so now the challenge is to maintain our high visitor numbers and get our visitors to come back again and again,” continues Halling, “Mattias has done a fantastic job, both commercially and creatively, and I can only congratulate the next group that manages to get him on board.”

”Now my part is done and the role of consultant CEO is being phased out. Three years of hard work with the world’s best employees has yielded fantastic results – and our visitors are loving it! Nine out of ten would like to come back and are happy to tell others about their visit,” says Mattias Hansson. “I am proud to be able to hand over a success story - it feels great.”

“We will continue to fine-tune our vision of a House of Music, creating a pilgrimage destination for all who want to experience Swedish pop music,” says Björn Ulvaeus. “We will also be developing an educational offering for schools and training programs, an area for which Mattias Hansson will retain responsibility.”

Information about ALS here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis

In August 2014, a challenge went viral online which was commonly known as the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge". A contestant will fill a bucket full of ice and water; they will then state who summoned them to do the challenge and will summon three other individuals of their choice to take part in it. The contestant then dumps the bucket of ice and water onto themselves. The contestant should then donate US $10 (or a similar amount in their local currency) to ALS research at the ALS Association, or Motor Neurone Disease Association in the UK. Any contestant who refuses to have the ice and water dumped on them is expected to donate US $100 to ALS research.
Many celebrities have taken part in the challenge, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Chris Pratt, Roger Federer, David Beckham, Cheryl Cole, George W. Bush,  Lady Gaga, Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, Charlie Sheen and Bill Gates, among many other well-known personalities and members of the general public.

Press Release • Aug 07, 2014 15:01 GMT

ABBA The Museum is proud to present the first of the season's POP Talk series on Sunday, August 17, featuring three key figures in ABBA’s touring around the world during the late 70's. Tour Promoter, Thomas Johansson, Stage Manager/Lighting Designer Jimmy Barnett and Ingmarie Halling, responsible for costumes, dressing room and make up, share never-before-revealed stories about ABBA on tour, 1977-1980 in what promises to be a pop-culture moment.

ABBA is considered one of the world’s most successful pop groups with 380 million albums sold. During their 10 years of career, ABBA toured the world, performing in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan.
“Our POP Talk series is a must for all diehard ABBA fans, and this first one will be a pop-culture moment for all music lovers,” says Mattias Hansson, CEO ABBA The Museum. “On stage will be three key players from ABBA’s inner circle for one show only discussing life behind the scenes with the group and how they contributed building ABBA on tour between 1977-1980, visually, back stage and – perhaps most important - practically.”
This POP Talk, will feature a number of fascinating backstage stories about how one of the greatest pop bands on earth took their hit-song catalogue on the road, in a decade of pure pop excellence. The audience will be privy to stories, photos and film clips that have never before been shared with the public. And, of course – there will be plenty of great ABBA live in concert music. Ingmarie, Thomas and Jimmy were also part of the team at the Wembley Arena concert in November 1979. On Sunday, August 17, they will be sharing memories from that unforgettable moment in ABBA’s career for the very first time.
This is a pop-culture moment not to be missed. One show only!

POP Talk – ABBA On Tour will be moderated by Mattias Hansson and it will be in English.
Time: Sunday, August 17 from 4-5pm. (please note that there is a limited number of seats and the audience should be seated by 3:30pm)
Place: ABBA The Museum, Djurgårdsvägen 68, Stockholm

About the Speakers
Jimmy Barnett is originally from London. He was the Production Manager for ABBA from 1977 to 1980, and Lighting Designer for the European and Australian tours of 1977. Jimmy also worked as Lighting Designer for The Rolling Stones in 1975 and 1976 and Lighting Designer for Queen from 1978 - 1984. Jimmy went on to run companies for Vari-Lite in Europe and Los Angeles before moving to New Zealand in 1990. Jimmy now works for New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, a New Zealand government organisation helping New Zealand companies succeed internationally.
Thomas Johansson is the legendary Swedish promoter and tour producer that worked with ABBA from 1973 and onwards. He made sure that all live shows and TV performances by ABBA were kept to the highest global standard. He has worked with almost all of the biggest artists in the history of rock and pop music, including the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Roxette. Today Mr. Johansson is the chairman of Live Nation International. But it all started with ABBA. He was there, and believe us, he has stories to tell.
Ingmarie Halling is the curator and producer of ABBA The Museum and author of the book “ABBA – The Backstage Stories”. Ingmarie went on tour with ABBA from 1977-1980 and was responsible for all their costumes, make-up and dressing room.

ABBA The Museum Expands - Now With Extra Room At Sea !

ABBA Museum Expands - Now With Extra Room At Sea !

In collaboration with Strömma, ABBA The Museum is starting a brand new sightseeing tour about ABBA. The boat tour, ABBA The Museum/Boat Tour, runs daily from Strömkajen and ends at Allmänna Gränd, around 200 metres from ABBA The Museum.

During the 50 minute boat trip around the scenic island of Djurgården, the tour visits several places linked to the pop group, while guests listen to stories, funny anecdotes and many well-known ABBA songs. The tour is offered in English and Swedish.

The tour is a collaboration between Strömma and ABBA The Museum and ties into the same storytelling approach featured at ABBA The Museum but in sightseeing format. The tour manuscript is written and narrated by Ingmarie Halling, curator at ABBA The Museum, in the spotlight right now with her book “ABBA – The Backstage Stories.”

“ABBA’s music has played an important role in people’s lives around the world and I believe there is great interest among visitors, from both Sweden and abroad, for this type of sightseeing tour in Stockholm. This new collaboration with ABBA The Museum opens up an exciting opportunity to combine our experience of quality sightseeing tours with their compelling story about ABBA,” said Oscar Carheden, COO of Strömma’s sightseeing operations in Sweden.

“Boating, listening to the story of ABBA and hearing their amazing music is naturally a wonderful Stockholm experience for all – fans, tourists and those of us who live here. We see the boat tour as an extra room for our museum – but at sea! It is a good fit since there is a strong connection between boating, Djurgården and ABBA,” said Catarina Falkenhav, COO of ABBA The Museum.

ABBA Backstage Stories Book Update - By Ingmarie Halling

March 2014 will see the publication of ABBA - The Backstage Stories. The book was instigated by Ingmarie Halling, ABBA's Make-up and Wardrobe Supervisor during their tours in 1977, 1979 and 1980 (i.e. all their tours outside the Nordic countries, except the 1974 tour of Germany and Austria).
Centred around Ingmarie's memories from the tours, and featuring previously unseen pictures from those tours, the parallel thread in the book is the other aspects of ABBA's visual presentation: the album sleeves, the costumes, and the videos. These texts were written by me. It all adds up to a book about the people who helped ABBA present themselves to their audience, and the tales they have to tell about their work - in other words, the backstage stories.
The book has plenty of commentary input from Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida, each of whom has also contributed a foreword.
At the time of writing, publishing deals are in place for Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany and the English-speaking countries.
In the UK and in other English-speaking countries the book will be published by Carlton under the title ABBA - The Treasures, with a completely different cover, although the contents are the same. Carlton have also sublicensed the book to UK retailer Sevenoaks Sound & Vision, who will publish the book with their own cover and under yet another title: ABBA - The Backstage Story. However, Bonnier Fakta in Sweden will also publish a number of English-language copies of the book. These will feature the same design and title as the Swedish edition.
In Denmark the title of the book is ABBA bag scenen, which translates as ABBA Backstage.
In Germany the title of the book is ABBA Backstage.

ABBA Backstage Stories Book - Sneak Peek

Here is the new cover for the English language version of the book 'ABBA: Backstage Stories' by Ingmarie Halling with Carl Magnus Palm.

I don't like this new cover and the name 'ABBA The Treasures' is totally wrong for the content of the book. Goodness knows what the publishers are thinking with this change.

Be sure to scroll down for a sneak peek inside the book :)

Available in March 2014.

ABBA: The Backstage Stories - New Book For March 2014

ABBA. The backstage stories
Ingmarie Halling and Carl Magnus Palm

format 245x283 mm, 80 pages, facsimile envelopes all in a box
rights sold: Denmark, UK, Germany, USA

We all remember ABBA for their fantastic music and countless hits – but also the visual side of the group. ABBA’s “outrageous” stage costumes were iconic of 70’s fashion in general and are, apart from the music, the first thing that springs to mind when you hear the name ABBA.

This book includes stories never told before. It includes also facsimile envelopes with personal memories from the four members, never shown before. The three major tours in 1977, 1979 and 1980 all visually rewarding, are given a lot of space in the book. Ingmarie Halling is a close friend to the members and she has made interviews for the book, therefore some of the text will be from today.

The book will be launched in March 2014, 40 years after the win in Brighton with “Waterloo”.

Ingmarie Halling was responsible for the dressing room on ABBA’s major tours. Thanks to Ingmarie’s wide circle of contacts, many other people that worked behind the scenes tell us what it was like in the good old days. Many of these people have rarely or never talked about their work with ABBA, so there will be plenty of new, fresh anecdotes and reflections from ABBA members.

Carl Magnus Palm has been the world’s leading authority on ABBA for the past two decades and has written a number of books about the group. In this book, he will be sharing his knowledge about the history of ABBA.
